Joseph Martin Kraus: Sym in C minor

I'm enjoying Antonini's Basel CO performance of this turbulent three movement symphony from vol 5 of his Haydn 2032 series on Alpha.

The work was dedicated to Haydn who I think performed it several times - later he said "The symphony [Kraus] wrote here in Vienna especially for me will be regarded as a masterpiece for centuries to come; believe me, there are few people who can compose something like that."

Antonini's is perhaps the best this excellent symphony has received, on period instruments anyway - does anyone have a non-HIP recommendation?

The Stuttgart CO under Sieghart (a traditional modern orchestral version) received an OK review in Gramophone, which also recommended the Cappella Coloniensis under Linde (at least I assume this is the 'Concerto Cologne' recording referred to in the review), which sounds good to me, slightly more genial than Antonini's fiery recording but not as comfortable as Sieghart - but now I can see a Naxos release with the Swedish CO under Sundkvist.

EDIT - actually I now realise the Concerto Cologne (Koln) is an period ensemble and different from the Cappella Coloniensis (modern orchestra) - who have both recorded the work. I prefer the latter.

I am very fond of Kraus - Concerto Koln recorded two discs of the symphonies, and there is also a disc of his piano music recorded by Brautigam on a fortepiano for BIS that's well worth hearing.

Is Concerto Koln a different ensemble than Musica Antica Koln?

... also a CD of symphonies with the OAE and Anthony Halstead on musica sveciae, and of chamber music with Jaap Schroder also on musica sveciae.

They are separate entities : Musica Antiqua Köln, founded by Reinhard Goebel in 1973 disbanded in 2007; Concerto Köln was founded in 1985.

There is also this bargain from Capriccio, which gathers both the Concerto Koln CDs and other works I don't have...more annoying duplications, but I feel I might be tempted!

            .

... actually, if you search the presto site for Kraus there is quite a lot available. In pertick'ler, I note that there are quite a few naxos discs....
