Rudolf Kempe favourite recordings

Many happy memories of hearing him live with the RPO, BBCSO and a fabulous Elektra at Covent Garden. He was a wonderful conductor on a good day –in concerts I heard among other things a terrific Bruckner 7, Beethoven 9 and Brahms 1 all with the RPO at the Festival Hall, and several Proms (Heldenleben, Janacek Sinfonietta and so on). On records, my favourites are the Brahms BPO cycle already mentioned (an outstanding No. 3), the Strauss box, both complete Meistersinger recordings (EMI and the earlier Dresden one, just reissued and sounding better than ever), the Rheingold extracts disc and two ICA DVDs: Heldenleben and the New World on one, Brahms 2 (Bamberg SO) on the other. Plenty of other good things too. This morning his live Tchaik 5 from 1975 with the Bavarian Radio SO (Orfeo) arrived. Greatly looking forward to giving that a spin.

My first Kempe LP was Scheherazade with Alan Loveday's glorious solos. Cheap (CfP) and not a great success with the critics but I loved it - haven't listened to it in years.

A performance of Brahms 1 in Sheffield in 1971, with the MPO, convinced me of his credentials with this composer.

After 50 years my memory may be playing me false, but I remember a Brahms 1 conducted by James Loughran as a late replacement for an indisposed Kempe. This led to a further connection between Loughran and the Munich orchestra.
