Vikingur Olafsson: Rameau and Debussy

This album was featured on the cover of Gramophone. The article accompanying has some interesting details on the recording and is worth reading but the album itself is superb. I’ve never heard Rameau on the Piano before, and the intermixing of the two Composers has made me think of Debussy in a new light. A rare album combing super musicianship, excellent recording, and thought provoking programming

It is indeed a delicious recital. The juxtaposition of the pieces shows their links, and these can be striking.

Ólafsson performs a piece weekly on Friday evenings on R4’s Front Row (repeated on R3 the following week). A delight.

I have listened to it a few times. I still can’t quite get my head round the Rameau on piano....in my imagination it seems to be a mechanism to stop him from having to nip between instruments during the recording !

Nonetheless, its a lovely disc, we recently gave it as a present,( and I know it was much appreciated) , but never had the chance to rip it before sending .......

I think he makes a persuasive case for the Piano in Rameau. Listen to him doing the hen pecks in “La Poule”. I’m getting Carpal Tunnel symptoms every time that I hear it!

Alexandre Tharaud’s 2001 album of Rameau Suites is a gem too https://www.harmoniamundi.com/#!/albums/472 which I’ve enjoyed a lot since acquiring it soon after it appeared. (It also includes a Debussy piece).

Agree with the views above: both Bach and Rameau/Debussy are superb discs. The Back is superbly recorded too, the later one just needs a bit more hall sound for perfection.

I have not seen another thread on this young pianist but his Mozart and contemporaries disc is also outstanding.Terrific accounts of K457 and K545 sonatas and of Haydn's No 47. A fizzing Rondo II in D Minor by CPE Bach, a lovely sonata arranged from Cimarosa's No 42 in D Minor , a number of beautifully played shorter Mozart pieces and to finish a very moving account of Liszt's transcription of Ave Verum Corpus.

Another magical record.
