Beethoven 9 and Missa Solemnis BRSO/Kubelik live on Orfeo

Rob Cowan raved about this bargain priced 2CD set released by Orfeo last autumn and it was. Gramophone Editor’s Choice .

I have not listened to MS yet - plan to tomorrow - but it is a fabulous Ninth and the finale is one of the best sung I have ever heard both by choir and the terrific solo quartet of Donath , Fassbaender , Laubenthal and Sotin ( the latter two are replaced by Schreier and JSQ on the Missa ) .

Very highly recommended for the Ninth at least so far.

I wholeheartedly second both RC's and your recommendation. I've had these CDs for several years since their original separate issue on the Orfeo label and they are indeed excellent.

Just double checked and see that the 9th Symphony was issued in 1989 and the MS in 1994! Can it really be that long ago?!

Interesting , strange that RC made no reference to Lionel Salter’s equally rave review from August 1990 on Gramophone.

As far as I know, Jansons has not recorded the Missa Solemnis. The CotW website https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000hx7b lists the Giulini recording of the Missa Solemnis as the one played with Jansons contributing the 9th finale.

Yes but, in many ways, I found after listening, via Spotify, that it was a very apt coupling. A very enjoyable 2.5hrs or so listen.
