Phase 4 recordings were as tasteless an anything ever put on the classical market. I bought the big CD box set and quickly regretted wasting my money. Most recordings are very tiring to listen to, and remind me of the amateur sound technicians in many small local theatre. The general philosophy is: "If it's quiet, turn it up". So there's virtually no crescendo in Ravel's Bolero.

I remember enjoying the 'spectacular' Leinsdorf/LSO Phase 4 of Rosenkavalier Suites and Tannhauser Ov. and Venusberg music - must dig it out and see if it stands the test of time as a recording or try to find it on Spotify.

Many thanks. It's good to be prepared.

This one puzzles me a bit:

Four Brahms symphonies plus three extra orchestral works on only two CDs? And Sir John didn't generally rush things.

                It's actually 3 CDs:

                  That makes more sense.

Was that the same sampler that had Copland’s Hoedown done by Robert Irving and the Concert Arts O - that was stunningly good!

What do people think about Barbirolli’s interpretations of Mahler symphonies? Do they stand well against contemporary recordings?
                      Don’t cry for me

I may have rose-tinted spectacles here, but I would ask "How well do contemporary interpretations stand up against Barbirolli's?"

Not sure cloughie. Have searched through my LPs to see if I kept it after my father's death but no luck. On further consideration I think it was probably a general EMI classical sampler that just happened to include that JB Studio 2 track - seem to recall it also had the Scherzo from Schubert's Octet (Melos Ens) and possibly Fossils from S-S's Carnival.

It was probably very formative of my early musical tastes - think over the years I've bought quite a few of the recordings featured. Which I suppose may have been the whole point of the disc
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

On the whole, I would say they more than hold their own, though the EMI/Warner recording of the 6th is, perhaps, not quite up to his standard for the 1st, 5th or 9th.

This was the one! The Boult Nutcracker Pas de deux was also excellent!
