Originally posted by Eine Alpensinfonie View PostPhase 4 recordings were as tasteless an anything ever put on the classical market. I bought the big CD box set and quickly regretted wasting my money. Most recordings are very tiring to listen to, and remind me of the amateur sound technicians in many small local theatre. The general philosophy is: "If it's quiet, turn it up". So there's virtually no crescendo in Ravel's Bolero.

Since then I've always felt let down by the purely orchestral version even though, being then snooty about Studio 2 recording quality, I eventually opted for the Beecham, which is a pretty fair substitute

It was probably very formative of my early musical tastes - think over the years I've bought quite a few of the recordings featured. Which I suppose may have been the whole point of the discI keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

On further consideration I think it was probably a general EMI classical sampler that just happened to include that JB Studio 2 track - seem to recall it also had the Scherzo from Schubert's Octet (Melos Ens) and possibly Fossils from S-S's Carnival.

This was the one! The Boult Nutcracker Pas de deux was also excellent!
