I've just ordered the Chicago Symphony Orchestra / Barenboim version for £2.68 including p&p, admittedly 2nd hand.

It'd better be good at that price...

It wasn't easy, but most of the pieces I chose on this occasion have strong non-musical associations (birth of our son, holidays, concerts attended, and so on) in addition to their intrinsic musical merits. I could just as easily have chosen 8 works by English composers, 8 by Mozart, or 8 vocal or non-vocal numbers from the 1930s and 1940s. It was very hard to omit Brahms!

                It’s a good one IMO.
Do you have an off-air one of that mega Manchester performance?

I was actually in a situation once where I was involuntarily whittled down to just a few favorite lps. In my mid twenties I had stored the bulk of my collection temporarily in my basement, but a few albums were laying next to the system to be played. A summer storm then flooded the basement and ruined the bulk of my collection. I was to poor at the time to buy any replacements and made do with the radio and those few records. I still remember what they were, as they were the only ones I could play for years.

                        Bach- Brandenburgs- Ristenpart conducting
                        Beethoven 7-Solti/CSO
                        Beethoven Op.110/111 Sonatas. Gary Graffman
                        Debussy-La Mer Barbirolli/Halle
Grieg/Schumann PCs. Ogden/Berglund forgot the Orchestra
                        Mahler 1/2 Walter/N.Y. Phil
                        Schubert 5/8. Reiner/CSO
                        Tchaikovsky Symphony 5 Monteux/Boston

After a while I would have killed for some Chopin, some chamber music, and a host of other lost recordings, but looking back, it wasn’t a bad little collection

                          The New Philharmonia, I think.
