    Good point: well remembered.
Come back Mal, and save us all the heartache.

I often think of the woman who recorded all the announcements used on trains: how long did it take for her to record all the possible combinations of stations, directions, stops on the entire network? Doe she have owership of the copyright? Is she paid royalties? Did she need counselling?

Surely all those regular announcements on trains and in stations are computer generated?

Yes indeed. I’ve been - guiltily - wondering whether he feels that he has been chased away. I hope not but. I much miss his deconstruction of Saturday morning’s BaL.

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I think things have improved quite a bit since the days of Captain Kirk and Mr Spock

Yes - where is he? I hope he decides to return in a blaze of glory. I thoroughly enjoyed his insightful and entertaining 'write-ups'. After the dreaded two-fers became the norm, I looked forward to his contributions on here, as a highlight of my day! Musically speaking, I should add....

I understand that the voices are real voices recorded, the sequence of words etc. is computer generated.

We changed the voice on our old TomTom to 'Tim' but I got into trouble for saying that I simply couldn't trust a woman to give us directions...

... yes. The underground nearest here has Circle and also Hammersmith & City Line trains. There was clearly a tiny error in the cutting-up of the words, so as a result the announcements have 'This a pCircle Line train' and 'This is a pammersmith & City Line train'.

                        .

I like the idea of a ‘Pamela Smith and City Line’.

A radio review in the Spectator - “ Top Bantz “ by Richard Bratby .... posting the link has defeated me ...... it is his view on Building A Library and This Classical Life. On the former we find “ ... but McGregor handles his guests with the minimum of fuss, intervening to elucidate technicalities .... There’s much talk of Radio 3’s intellectual decline, but Building a Library still assumes that listeners can infer meaning from context.”
He ends the review “Like Building A Library, This Classical Life leaves you with a list of discoveries, and a sense of having glimpsed inside the workings of an art. I smiled right through it.”
