Not much opera (other than Wagner) mentioned so far so I would request Klemperer's Le Nozze Di Figaro (lovely performance from Sir Geraint Evans, Reri Grist, Gabriel Bacquier, Elisabeth Söderström and Teresa Berganza). I have and love his Cosi and Giovanni. Less struck by the Zauberflote.

Barbirolli's VPO recordings of the Brahms Symphonies on EMI were issued very briefly on Royal Classics, but have never been seen since. I missed the boat that time, but given a second chance...

I managed to catch them on that label, but missed the MunichPO Kempe Beethoven set. Another set which I would like to see is the Loughran Beethoven Symphony set and a Schubert 9, which were on the Enigma label and then on ASV but presumably because of the Hickox set, never appeared on ASV Quicksilver, or maybe there was some ownership problem. I don't think the Halle's own label have issued any Loughran material - again this may be contractual.

I agree, the Halle Beethoven series under Loughran invariably received good old fashioned
full length reviews, appreciative in nature, from Richard Osborne in Gramophone.

They certanly werent dismissed as provincial also rans.

I wonder how they would stack up today.

I don't know anything about this company or the website but it seems that a boxed set of the three CDs is available from here for £9.99.

The website seems to for a company called Scribendum who also produce their own remasterings of old recordings. (I happened upon the website because I was searching for Svetlanov's Elgar Symphony No2, which they have on their own label.)

            Payment is by Paypal.

Thanks johnb, but the only Barbirolli sets I can see there are of the Dvorak and Tchaikovsky symphonies with the Halle. But at least we getting warm.

                Whoops!

Apologies, the Dvorak was listed under Brahms and I didn't notice that it was actually Dvorak.

If you hunt around you can find them still pretty cheaply:
                  Nos. 2 and 3: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Brahms-Symph...3271748&sr=1-2
                  No. 1: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Brahms-Symph...3271748&sr=1-9
                  No. 4: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Brahms-Symph...271748&sr=1-11

That'll get you the whole lot for less than 20 quid if you want them before they reappear from someone else.

I can vouch for the genuiness of Scribendum, in that I have met the proprietor (it's a one-man operation) and the business is run about 500 yards from where I write. I have seen some of the products, though never actually been a customer. You might possibily have to make allowances for the scale of the operation in response time, I don't know.

I love the Barbirolli / VPO Brahms, but I must confess it is all very 'con amore' and perhaps not to everybody's taste. I would collect anything by Barbirolli, as would of Beecham, Monteux, Stokowski, Reiner and Szell, all very different but never to be missed even when being perverse.

Thanks makropulos. I've just ordered the lot.

I have the Scribendum issue of transfers of Mahler 8 (Flipse) and 10 (Morris). I have no complaints regarding the quality if the product.

I have the two Svetlanov Shostakovich 'Leningrad' recordings as well as the 1965 Mravinsky in Moscow set. I wasn't aware of the 1972 set so that's another for my wish list. I, too, have no complaints about the product - very much the reverse in fact. The label deserves to be better known.

Thanks for the recommendations for Scribendum. I'm now definitely going to order their Svetlanov Elgar 2.

Yes, I know it isn't exactly 'idiomatic' and I realise that many would hate the performance but IMO there is something quite glorious about it in spite of all the drawbacks.

Jimmy Loughran's Brahms 2 with the Halle Orchestra (CFP) was one of the first LPs I bought in Vincents in Needless Alley in Birmingham many years ago. I still treasure it now, with a fine account of the Academic Festival Overture. I also have an LP of his Last Night of the Proms (circe 1980s) which convinced me that I had to be there myself. I've even got some Havergal Brian conducted by this genial Scot. I noted that this year marked his 80th birthday: I hope that he continues hale and hearty!
