    RR Sept 2019

We begin another season in which no doubt it will all be built around the preposterous proposition that AMcG is an expert in ALL genres and all reviewers mere supplicants at the throne. A season of twofers, interruptions, interventions, gabbling and the inevitable conclusion that the reviewer - who has done the detailed research etc - is NOT actually in charge at all.

    Hey ho.

Ouch! Frolova-Walker sounded decidedly put out by McGregor's skipping to the finale when she apparently had more to say about approaches to the Gavotte.

Yep, truly absurd start - underlining precisely what I wrote above!! She was obviously angry, and what is more HE did not apologise for upsetting and confusing her LIVE on air.

      What a dreadful start!

She had every reason to leave at that point. If she had we might have seen the twofers’ demise?

It will be sad if this sort of thing deters experts like Frolova-Walker from taking part in future.

When AMG moved on to the finale of the symphony today, it seemed that F-G was expecting another version of the Gavotte. Utter confusion.

Edit - Sorry, Bryn got there first.

If ever you needed an indictment of this twofer format, that was it - right there - the VERY first of the new season.
Would love to know if any would-be reviewers of some renown have ever refused to appear in that format because of its potential for disaster?

A shame as she had managed to convey more of her opinions that most but was put in her place by that gaffe.

There's a mystery about the lack of a BaL on Saturday 28th September, 2019.

When I was looking ahead on the R3 webpage, I distinctly remember seeing that it would feature Handel's 4 Coronation Anthems. But on rechecking a few days later, this had disappeared.

Andrew McGregor usually announces the next BaL at the end of the previous one. But this week, he didn't say a word. Perhaps the chosen reviewer had refused to to a twofer.

These two-hand BaLs really do NOT work; there have by now, been enough of them to make an objective judgment. "Let the dumbing down continue" appears to be the Radio 3 unwritten dictum.

Surely it would need the entire programme to do justice to this prolific composer, as there are a number of recordings of his best-known works such as the symphonies!
