    Gounod : Romeo et Juliette

What a lovely opera this is - packed with cracking numbers four love duets , the Waltz Song etc.

Bought the Alagna/Gheorghiu Plasson for a song . Highly recommended.

I bought the same recording earlier this summer and I entirely agree.

That's a good nudge. I have recordings of some of the arias but don't know the whole opera. A couple of years ago I (belatedly) got to know his songs via a very recommendable Hyperion twofer.

All of Gounod’s operas are third-rate and suffer from hackwork librettos (which explains their massive popularity with the Victorian public) but this one has some pleasant tunes and I prefer it to Faust. The Alaina-Gheorghiu recording is very good indeed.

It is not third rate - in its genre it is first rate. Gounod isn’t Wagner but then again I would rather listen to Romeo and Juliet than the immensely dreary Das Rheingold any day.
