This came in the Jurowski / LPO box (still only £6.50 at 7digital)

It's an almost overwhelmingly beautiful work. Ravel would have been extremely proud of the textures created.

I missed the fuss about this piece a decade or two ago and the Gramo review of the Jurowski box was sniffy about this piece so I decided to "half listen" while on the tube but it quickly became apparent that this was something rather special...

Don't expect a muscular highly "symphonic" work but if you like ear-tickling textures then don't hesitate! There's also a BIS recording with Lahti/Saraste

I didn’t know about this site - it’s even cheaper in mp3, otherwise the 16 bit FLAC version is around £6.50 - seems a bargain.

Oddly after the recent discussion about FLAC this would be one reason for me to revisit FLAC conversion software, as it might take a bit of effort to convert into a format for my Apple kit. I’ve done this before, but had no occasion to revisit such software/investigation during the last few years.

I use DBPoweramp to covert FLAC to ALAC (Apple Lossless). It works well. Only point to note that my Naim Streamers dislike 24 bit ALAC files (there's an audible "pop" between tracks).

Not heard the Jurowski, but I bought the much earlier DSO Berlin/Robertson Sony release (1996) after DJF's enthusiastic Gramophone review... a very beautiful contemplative work, yes....broadly in the Spiritual Minimalist area.... if you want a single album, this is very good indeed...

(There is an earlier Kiev recording on Melodiya, 1988, which DJF liked even more, but I've never searched for it...IIRC, Saraste did it in Lahti, c/w No.4...)

Discussed on the 'Bargains' thread a couple of weeks ago when Matthias B brought the Jurowski 10 years set - plus the various Berlin Philharmonic own-label sets to our attention. I've been listening a lot to - and getting much pleasure from - the VJ set. At the price, a steal.

As to FLAC to ALAC, I use XLD to convert FLAC files, either to ALAC or AIFF. It's free, easy to use and, 200+ conversions later, wholly reliable. You can set it to put converted files straight into your i-Tunes library, as well as into a folder on your Mac. See:
