I have long loved his Emperor with Furtwangler and recently fell for his wartime Brahms 2 . I have also long been found of his sparkling lieder accompaniments for Schwarzkopf and more recently have enjoyed the extraordinary Schubert on Testament.
Recently, after Presto’s Testament sale I bought the self directed Beethoven 3 and 4 with the Philharmonia from 1954 .
There may be wrong notes but oh what playing some of the runs send a shiver up the spine and how characterful an accompaniment from the Philharmonia at its mid 50s peak - utterly wonderful performances that knock neat “straight” Beethoven into a cocked hat - cadenzas perhaps the only downside ( interesting but not very Beethoven)
