Anyone else heard the Naxos disc of her 1st and 4th symphonies . There is a risk they could treated as cod Dvorak but that strikes me as unfair as refusing to listen to the New World as it involves cultural appropriation! Her use of spirituals is after all following on from what Dvorak foresaw as their importance in American music.
Furthermore, her adoption of juba dances makes these symphonies . On first listening they sound wonderfully orchestrated though I did find some of the music overly repetitious especially in the second movement of the First Symphony .
Enjoyable works and the woodwind and brass writing I have been particularly taken by.
