Andris Nelsons Shostakovich recordings

These have been getting rave reviews and I have had the coupling of 5,8 and 9 for a while but have only just started listening to it .

Only 5 and 9 so far and both strike me as extremely impressive a dark and far from triumphalist 5th and an absolutely pitch perfect Ninth .

Views anyone ?

There have been (more than) honourable mentions I've read, barbs (probably in New releases or What are you listening to..... threads); my rather simplistic 'Nelsons Shostakovich' search threw up too many options, but perhaps someone more adept at searching posts (Bryn?) can find some and point you in their direction. I think jayne might have posted some comments, but I'm not sure.

I'm just listening to the latest instalment, Nos. 6 & 7, and have reviewed all the others at t'usual place. FWIW I think it's developing into a first-rate cycle, Nos. 4 & 11 the best so far. Great playing and sound, too.

I have 4 & 11. Very good indeed. Strongly recommended. A friend of mine has all of them so far. They have the same high regard for them

Putting performance quality to one side for a moment, this Shost 4 is the best orchestral recording I’ve heard (and I’ve heard thousands). Absolutely wonderful that it’s coming from one of the major labels with a great orchestra. The performance is pretty darned good too.

I can only second the above comments. I will add that while the CDs sound fine, the High Rez downloads are the most stunning Orchestral recordings in my collection. I’ve been to Symphony Hall in Boston twice in the last 5 years and this is as close to reproducing the sound of an Orchestra in its venue as I have ever heard.

Thanks, Richard. Perhaps I should have made clear that I too am listening in hi res, 96/24 via Qobuz streaming. Mind you, I’d guess the CDs probably sound ok too.

The CDs (which arrived last week) don't sound as good as the 24/96 files, which I've just downloaded from HD Tracks (much cheaper than Qobuz, although I cheated by using the VPN on my MacBook to pretend that I was in Washington DC, rather than in France). I still don't much like the 7th as a piece of music but Nelsons and his stellar orchestra make the best possible case for it. The earlier releases, as everyone says above, justify all the praise which has been heaped on them. The 4th is particularly fine (but then so is the 9th, the 8th ....).
