That's exactly how I feel about my childhood/early adulthood haunt, Rae Macintosh in South Queensferry Street in Edinburgh, vinteuil. The hours I must have spent in there as a youngster! Although it still exists, it's nowhere near the nirvana I remember as a 15 year old.

I’ve been trying to remember the Duckworth Square shop name, CRC it was. Guy who ran it could seem aloof when you first met him but he didn’t half know his catalogue. Bought my first Solti CD Ring set from there, one per month I think. Once I’d done that he was most helpful and encouraging, he lent me some old ROH programmes, he’d seen nearly every singer, he knew his trade.
There was another, Dixon’s, in an arcade, smaller stock though, it fizzled out.
MDT was a really smart shop, in a nice yard but surrounded by bars and boutiques, tucked away as well.

Laughed at Conchis derogatory (but, sadly, completely true), remark about Derby. Melvyn Bragg was right with his cultural desert remark. I com from there, I take no offence, the town really never tried anywhere near hard enough.

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

              Is that what it was?

I presume so - it seems to have worked.

Yes, well worth doing business with for all those interesting CPO releases.
