Your biggest box

Can't compete with PG, I'm afraid, but I've just had the 106 CD box of George Szell's complete Columbia recordings which is my biggest one to date. Had I not bought the Karajan 1960s, 70s and 80s boxes I would have bought the biggest box of the lot. Like PG, not being an opera fan I passed on the HvK opera box, something I now regret and its availability is now somewhat in question.

Other favourite boxes are the Karl Böhm sets on DG (which must surely be amalgamated into one complete box at some point), the Jochum vol 1 and, my special favourite, the Kubelik box, all on DG. A pity that the EMI/Warner HvK edition wasn't done as a single boxed set: the 91 CDs would have complemented the DG very well. Another big favourite, which I've somehow managed to omit, is the excellent Solti/Chicago SO set on Decca.

I had a fair amount of duplication with the Solti set but it is so lovingly produced that it didn't matter and I've no regrets. If any owners of the monster 355 CD Karajan box have got the Opera box I would like to hear from them as I would be interested in acquiring it.

There's one on eBay just now for £125 or best offer as a 'buy it now'. Still a bit pricey but it's quite hard to find at a reasonable price.

The Mozart box.

Plus a few others, such as the EMI Karajan Boxes (about 80 CDs each), the Brilliant Bach Box - I think the first set, and the Brilliant Mozart Box - also an early set.
The Bernstein Symphony Box - and I’m still wondering whether to go for any of the other Bernstein collections.
The Berlin PO Box - I would have liked the VPO box as well but that would be greedy!

By an astonishing coincidence, this had only three duplications of CDs I already had. All the other big boxes I might have been tempted by had far too many duplications for me.

Can't help with the Opera Box - but did your CSO Solti duplicates include the later (late 80s DDD) Beethoven Symphonies set?

Yes - but only as single CDs not as a boxed set, and one of those (the Pastoral, I think) was a Presto CD.

With the varying sizes and heavy weights the only option is down on the floor! Smaller boxes go on the shelves but those really heavy boxes (the Solti and Szell especially) can, for safety reasons, go nowhere but the floor which is untidy but necessary. They can also present something of a lifting hazard for the unwary so mine tend to get dragged long the carpet!

A tricky one. The biggest box I have is the Philips Mozart Edition with 183 discs, but in reality this is broken up into many smaller boxes. The biggest single box I have is the 100 CD Brilliant Classics Beethoven Edition.

Not the biggest (that has to be HvK) but the Royal Concertgebouw Radio Legacy box (one box with two boxes inside) has 152 CDs. Bryn, I know, also a copy.

I am a little surprised not to see the Brilliant Classics Haydn Edition getting a mention, so far. Very recommendable, especially in its newer expanded versions of 160 discs. I have the earlier 150 disc original.
