    Your biggest box

Delighted with my Alfred Brendel ‘complete box’ which is by some distance my biggest to date.

I suspect there are many inveterate collectors who could boast much higher numbers.

    Petrushka, BRYN, Cloughie, Pasters?

I wasn’t targeted in the query, but the aforementioned Brendel box has been an endless source pleasure since I purchased it. I for some reason had taken a dislike to AB in earlier years and avoided purchasing his discs and have therefore not had duplication issues. And yes, it is at least twice as large as my next biggest box

Without a doubt the DG/Decca Karajan box (355 discs):

...and you missed ts off the list. The monster Karajan box, which led to some of us purchasing, has got to be the biggest - it is a feature in my music room/office/man cave!

I see the Brendel is 114 CDs - must check sometime how many duplicates I would have!

Very interesting. I too went through something of an anti phase, convinced the pianist didn’t really quite possess the technique needed of the greatest players. And was his sound world a touch dull and one dimensional?

He may still be capable of the left hand smudge or two but I’m really delighted to have got these recordings.

            Thanks Cloughie and Nethersage.

I do have a fairly large Karajan box in the garage, think that must be some sort of symphony edition.

Ah yes, the Symphony edition, running to a mere 38 discs.

Not a Karajan, yet not an also-ran, JSB 333 is quite something to behold. Pyramidal in fact. I’ve finally been allowed to ‘open the box’ - and (for those who remember ‘Take Your Pick!’ with Michael Miles) it didn’t contain a jar of steam!

As a result of the Big Box I have a spare one of those!

Well, since I've been asked, I had an amazing experience during the summer. I was surfing eBay one afternoon in August to discover a lady was selling the CBS box set of Lorin Maazel for...£8.00! Having snapped it up, I looked at the 'seller's other items' and was stunned to see all these sets at unbelievably low prices! (The Heifetz RCA set for £13.00!)

To cut a story short, I bought 20 of these big boxes for about £250 including the Karajan DG 'Opera' set which I'd been ambivalent about buying since I was keen to complete my other 3 Karajan sets but, to be honest, I'm not a huge opera fan. £14 to you, squire! I remember the sets arriving in a huge box total over 800 discs in total. They had belonged to her late father and she wanted rid of them asap.

My best friend bought the Bernstein 100 years/100 CDs set for £30 and gave it to me for Christmas. A couple of other friends bought sets I already had for little money including the Dutoit set for £14!

                      Unbelievable!

When I think that all those years ago the Harnoncourt/Leonhardt Bach cantata box of 60 CDs was a huge item - that's peanuts compared to that Karajan box!
