2018 : Your favourite historical ( pre 1968) reissue or live recording of this year
Off-the-top-of, the live choice would be the 10-12/1939 NBC/Toscanini Beethoven Cycle, best heard on the Music & Arts 2013 restoration. Make sure you get that one, not their earlier inferior sounding 2007 release...
(Mengelberg's 1940 Amsterdam cycle (Pristine best) would be a good, contrasting second choice...)
For studio recordings one towers above all others: Bruckner Symphonies 1-9. Vienna Symphony/Volkmar Andreae. Music & Arts 2009 (wonderful restorational work again) rec. 1953.
Bruckner from the Viennese fountainhead - responsively quick and alert yet so warmly expressive. If you hear it, your Brucknerian perceptions should be changed for ever....and it gives you the tradition for such recent originalities as Venzago's CPO cycle...
My favourite recording is the Yehudi and Hepzibar Menuhin recording of the Lekeu Violin Sonata on the sadly defunct Biddulph label. This is music making at its most volatile and white hot. Yes, there moments of inaccuracy but that only adds to the frisson of a 'live' studio recording.

Also, the Elgar recordings.
You all lose points as they were not released this year - fab as particularly the Music and Arts Toscanini Beethoven and the Lekeu Sonata recording both are .
If we are going for favourite ever then I would agree with EA to fix the date at pre stereo - and would promptly nominate not only the Menuhin/Elgar VC but the Paganini 1 with Monte or Enescu I cannot remember off the top of my head - much of the recorded output of Furtwangler etc etc etc
I made the stupid mistake of not reading the question properly.
Well, in that case, what about the recordings of Rachmaninov playing through his Symphonic Dances in discussion with Eugene Ormandy? I bought these CDs at tremendous expense, (about £60! ), and have yet to unwrap them although I have heard extracts on Record Review.

I was fascinated by those but probably not £60 fascinated !

The way I construed the sentence was: favourite pre-1968 Historical and/or 1968 live recording... ...!
So OK, reissues 2018, rec. pre-'68, right? And do you mean any live recording from this year (2018?)...or pre '68 only? My brain is sorely taxed....
Always great to get another plug in for Andreae's Bruckner anyhow...
