Does anyone know anything about Mr Eric Marshall, English(?) baritone?
I first came across him 30-odd years ago on a random junk-shop 78 (HMV D1055) with a (IMHO) treasurable performance of Brahms' "Wie bist du meine Konigin", coupled with a slightly less wonderful Schubert "Du bist die Ruh". Yet I've never found a mention of him in music dictionaries, or in Alan Blyth's fascinating/ infuriating Song on Record. Even Google has not yielded any biographical details. His regular accompanist seems to have been Maurice Jacobson, 1896-1976, who at least got an entry in New Grove.
Tonight I found this clip of him http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=28935 which at least shows us that the recent video explorations of Winterreise etc by the likes of Ian Bostridge are not without historical precedent. And there was I thinking that lieder-singers of this generation would have regarded even a little bit of hand-waving or face-pulling as terribly bad form!
FWIW, I don't think the Pathe clip shows him in anywhere near such a good light as my old 78.
