Clapping between movements revisited on record

Whether other live recordings are edited I am not sure but I was surprised this morning when listening to a lovely performance of the Beethoven Violin Concerto with Erica Morini and Szell in Cleveland in 1967 on the Memories label that I bought some time ago - to hear loud applause break out at the end of the first movement.

I would have expected Szell to have been rather firm about this but if he turned round and glare at the audience they did not take any notice !

Anyone have any other examples of live recordings where this occurs ?

Thankfully not, though I suppose it happens with live Italian opera recordings.

Indeed - I have a Live Don Carlo, conducted by Abbado in which very long and very noisy cheers of approval occur after every big number. (The performances are good, but the enthusiasm suggests that the audience is hearing the best thing they've ever heard.)

Yes - on the truly legendary 10/1948 Horowitz/NBC/Toscanini Brahms B Flat Concerto, where the audience dive in uncontainably during the first movement's final chord... and if you heard it you'd know exactly why!

More applause between 2nd and 3rd movements too. I think I've come across this elsewhere on historicals but can't recall exactly which...as it doesn't bother me too much. Of course on much more recent live tapings it would almost always be edited out and you'd never know it had been there...

Unfair to giant mutant amphibian lizards! I'm fond of Shin Godzilla (latest very epic film version haunting and disturbing, bit hard on the dear creature though) so leave him alone...!

One of my 'Discs of the year' is the Erato cd of the 2 Brahms String Sextets played by an ensemble led by Renard Capucon. Not only is the applause included but, as far as I can tell, the gap between the players sitting down to play the Op.36 is kept in.

Oddly enough, I recently got another cd of these works with an ensemble led by Giuliano Carmignola where the applause remains. Alas, not nearly as good performances.
