Elgar's Piano Quintet

I do think this new performance sounded absolutely lovely. I had never heard of the Goldner Quartet before, let alone heard them, but they are etched in my memory for further investigation now.

The recording I thought outstanding. I think engineers are beginning to understand how to get much more of the nuances and beauties of instrumental playing than they did before. It may partly be down to finding the right venue, of course - in this case Potton Hall.

Thanks for this info. I have missed both the recital and your message in time, Ofcachap, but I shall listen on the IPlayer. I see from the blurb that they are based in Australia. So much good is coming from the Antipodes these days, musically speaking, that I should not now regret moving there as some of family did more than thirty years ago!

They've been around since the 90s, I think, and have appeared at Wigmore Hall a number of times. I can't say I've actually heard them until now, though. I'd never heard the Elgar Quintet either but I'm completely bowled over by it. Surely one of the recordings of the year.

I particularly enjoy the Bingham/Medici and Ogdon/Allegri recordings. I will be investigating the new Hyperion recording too.

I was lucky enough to have some lessons with John Bingham, a much underrated British pianist in my opinion.

i dld the Vogt et al version of the Schumann Quintet and have now realised that the coupling is the Elgar to which I am now listening ... thanks for the thread which prompted me to listen to it
