Well - it does get chilly in those things. (And ambulances can be pretty nippy vehicles .)

Thanks - and to Bryn and Pulcie for the "pointers" (and, yes, jean's contribution would indeed be welcome). I've been trying without success to see if I can find any 17th C (or earlier) usages of the word in the Italian texts I have handy.

For those of you wanting to know just how much space the set would take up, scroll down this page and see one of France Musique's presenters with the box...frankly, I really couldn't find a place for it!

From mid-C17th to early C18th was the 'Little Ice Age', so perhaps a brisk walk was indeed more in order at that time.

Mine sits on top of a very rarely deployed Tannoy Sfx sub-woofer.

So do I... and haven't been able to get out of the habit since 1969, when I built a Mullard kit amplifier, a turntable plinth (for a Garrard SP25) and a pair of rather primitive but substantial speaker cabinets. For some of us, playing vinyl records is decidedly not the result of some recent fad.

I've cared lovingly for my modest collection of around 2000 LPs which remain in good condition, so they don't actually 'snap, crackle and pop' or 'get damaged after a few playings', apart from some of those bought from local second hand record shops during impecunious student days. Many of these LPs have never been released in CD format. Unlike CDs, I never lend LPs to friends due to the likelihood of damage.

I simply like the sound - Dynavector DV-20X2L MC cartridge + DV phono amp in PE mode / Thorens TD 126 MkIV turntable + Alphason 100S tonearm / Icon Audio Stereo 40 MkIII KT88 valve amp in triode mode / Quad ESL-57 (rebuilt) or PMC Twenty24 loudspeakers (according to mood).

However, even if Bach 333 were ever offered in a (no doubt crazily-priced) vinyl edition, I'd have to go for the CDs if only for space-saving reasons. It seems that CDs do have a some advantages.
