I've been a "hard g in Gerontius" since I heard/read in my teens that that was how the composer pronounced it, but the "evidence" seems to be lacking.I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Elgar is often a problem where pronunciation is concerned. For most of his life his name was edWAHRD ELgrrr - pretty well the opposite of what we say now (EDwd ELGAHR). It was WW1 that did for the Germanic pronunciation of Edward (people had lived in the Edwahrdian age).Last edited by Pabmusic; 14-09-18, 21:56.

Valid point - though with the demise of brass band programming on R3 and R2 Elgar H performances are rarities when they used to be almost weekly! Can I put in a plug for Pictures at an Exhibition ? One of the best ever arrangements - Ravel, Henry Wood and Keith Emerson not excepted. Good that the great man is still with us .
