I suspect the whole of this discussion is of absolutely no interest to MrJongJong.
Jerrold Northrop Moore and Michael Kennedy both pronounced it 'Kareece". What did they know? My beloved daughter is - and always has been - 'kariss'.

Presumably Kariss and coined from his wife's names Caroline Alice.

I've been a "hard g in Gerontius" since I heard/read in my teens that that was how the composer pronounced it, but the "evidence" seems to be lacking.
Does anyone pronounce Eliot's Gerontion with a soft g?
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Gethsemane is usually hard G , isn’t it ? Does that count ?

That's what I say, though the dedication of Salut d'Amour (which is where it all began) is in French and presumably would have had the long eee - à Carice.

Elgar is often a problem where pronunciation is concerned. For most of his life his name was edWAHRD ELgrrr - pretty well the opposite of what we say now (EDwd ELGAHR). It was WW1 that did for the Germanic pronunciation of Edward (people had lived in the Edwahrdian age).

Welcome to the JB Fan Club. That Kings Lynn No1 is something special, do you have the recording with the Sea Pictures?

Valid point - though with the demise of brass band programming on R3 and R2 Elgar H performances are rarities when they used to be almost weekly! Can I put in a plug for Pictures at an Exhibition ? One of the best ever arrangements - Ravel, Henry Wood and Keith Emerson not excepted. Good that the great man is still with us .
