The "famous" Everest recording is with the Stadium Symphony Orchestra of New York - which was the NYPO when recording for the better-known labels. The "Stadium" involved was Lewisohn Stadium:

I'd have to choose from Rozhdestvensky in the ballets, and Svetlanov in the Symphonies...

            Probably the Rozh 1960 Nutcracker, and his 1969 Swan Lake (both Melodiya/BMG);
Then the live Tokyo 1990 Suntory Hall performances of Symphonies 3,5 and 6 from USSRSSO/Svetlanov, (Pony Canyon HDCD, Exton etc.)...

            No, wait!
I'll lose the Rozh Swan Lake, to include....
            Violin Concerto
            Kopatchinskaya/MusicAeterna/Currentzis...

Artur Schnabel said that the greatest music was "better than it can be played".... so as Beethoven said, "maybe the opposite is also true"....

After all, how many times has it been said 'The performance didn't do the music justice' ?
I suspect the difficulty is that those who know about music or have a view as to a piece's worth would find it difficult or impossible to overlook shortcomings, however good the performance?

Re the Hvorostovsky aria from Onegin, it wasn't from the full opera conducted by Bychkov, with the Orchestre de Paris (which is a recording I love). The music played on the program was from a CD of arias conducted by Gergiev.

1: Swan Lake - Moscow Radio SO/Rozhdestvensky Overwhelming, thrilling performance, just wonderful
2: Manfred - Philharmonia Orchestra/Muti The most exciting ending to the first movement on disc
3: Francesca da Rimini - Leningrad PO/Rozhdestvensky (DG) This is the most thrilling performance of FdR I've ever heard
4: Nutcracker Act 2 - BBCSO/Rozhdestvensky (DVD) I was present at this 1981 Prom. Sheer delight from start to finish
5: Symphony No 6 - Leningrad PO/Mravinsky A live 1982 recording, not the DG studio one
"The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink

                            3. Symphony 6 - Celi (how on EARTH does the orchestra sustain those tempi?)

No, the live 1982 recording (on Erato) is my preference here.

I was thinking about buying the two cd set from DG.
