    RR 4th August 2018

Somewhat taken aback to hear Andrew McGregor, in his introduction to the new Casals Quartet recording of Beethoven's String Quartet version of Op. 14/1, that he had never heard the work on that form before. How can this be? O.k., it's not included in most surveys of the Beethoven String QUartets on record, but both the Gewandhaus-Quartett and the Endellions include it in their surveys, for instance. Now has it been the Blondeau arrangements from Beethoven Paino Sonatas, that would be more excusable. Would that other string quartet ensmbles played it.

Give the man a break. Why should he have heard it? He can't make sure he's heard everything, and it's rather obscure, in my view (never heard it, and quite happy with the piano version!).
