Consequence of this thread, I'm re-auditioning H's masses and particularly loving St Nicholas and Theresienmesse by English Consort / Pinnock.

    Thanks to whoever recommended!

If you want boys' voices in the Masses, the Preston/Hogwood and Bruno Weil versions are very pleasing.

I was given a set of Rudolf Buchbinder's complete recording of the Haydn piano sonatas (plus a few extras on the last disc) at Christmas 2016. This has allowed me to get to know the early sonatas as well as the later, better-known ones. Although aware of him earlier, I first took notice of Buchbinder when I heard most of his Edinburgh Festival Beethoven cycle on R3. In my view he is an under-rated pianist in the Viennese tradition - I am aware that some people find his interpretations insufficiently characterised, but to me his understated interpretations allow the music to speak for itself. It is a shame that he did not record the keyboard version of the Seven Last Words.

Szell's recordings of six late symphonies have very much joined my pantheon - and have rediscovered a missing CD of Pinnock's Nelson Mass recording - very good indeed.

Having a sudden Haydn symphony craze now.

Any votes for 52 and 73? Wonderful music.

                  Yes!
The single-CD compilations in my collection that I particularly enjoy are:
                  60, 70, 90 (CBSO/Rattle; possibly a jlw recommendation)
                  31, 59, 73 (Concentus musicus Wien/Harnoncourt)

I'm also happy with the two 2CD sets of the London (RCO/Davis) that I already had.

I have a great fondness for the Symphony No 86, probably my favourite after 102. I have Colin Davis and the Concertgebouw in No 86 on LP but I can't find a CD issue. Is there one?

My favourite Haydn minuet is that to 88. It goes with a tremendous swing.

Very strange that it was not included in the 2016 Symphonies box.

Yes, I specifically looked for the Haydn 86 but as it wasn't there I passed on the set as there was too much duplication otherwise.

No. 21 in A, which I am sure would be played as often as No. 22 if only it had a nickname!

And yet number 98, with which 86 was coupled on the LP issue, is included in the box.

It seems that Colin Davis's No 86 has never been released on CD, not even in Japan. Some comment about it on the amazon.com website. I think that I still have the LP.
