Since first putting the stylus down on this LP and journeying through that epic first movement, it became obvious that this record was something special. I'd become attuned to slow Schubert by Sviatoslav Richter, eg the atonishingly lengthy first movement of his G major Sonata D894 (including exposition repeat), heard live on R3 from the 1977 Aldebrough Festival, and the care-laden opening of the B flat D960... molto moderato indeed.

Yes - a pity they never recorded the Voces Intimae; a Finnish Classic.

With the Euro at a low rate it is often worth checking continental prices even if postage is higher. I finally decided to get the 17 CD John Ogdon Icon Box which seems to be starting to become unavailable. Just ordered for £22.29 from Amazon.de. From the same Netherlands seller on Amazon UK it comes to £26.

Re QI: fond memories of two LPs from my early collecting days- Debussy/Ravel, Beethoven op 130 + Grosse Fuge. Latterly Schubert and Brahms on CD.

agreed. I have heard other groups play this who sounded all washed up.

This is all so neff on a string quartet thread
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Very tempting - incidentally looking at the disc by disc listing it is another of those guess the composer jobs!

The price of the Ogdon box has yo yo d for some time - I think I bought it in August, when Amazon were matching Europadisc or similar, for under £16.
