I've edited the thread title, as Die Schöpfung carries an umlaut on the 'o'. (No doubt pedantry for some; its absence grates for a german speaker, though!)

Interesting, Vints...I never got hold of this version when it came out in the 80s. I seem to recall it being a live recording and wasn't there a strange coincidence of a real storm passing overhead during part of the music, adding to the atmosphere of the recording?

Nobody seems to have said anything about the Gardiner recording, which is the only one I know well - he has a very fine choir as always, of course, and a good lineup of soloists too, and a fleet-footed and dramatic approach; it's the only one I actually own. I haven't heard Kuijken or Harnoncourt, both of whom in general do Haydn the way I like it, and I did have the Brüggen recording for a while but once the Gardiner was released I didn't think I'd ever want to hear it again and so disposed of it (this was at a time of serious spatial and financial restrictions!). It isn't a work I spend much time with, for some reason.

I kind of mentioned it earlier on and yes. It is most splendid! I might just play this recording today. First week in the New Year etc... One I always return to, it seems.

First new acquisition - the Fruhbeck de Burghos recording on CFP. Initial thoughts can often be misleading but overall this was rather good if mainly on account of the choir, orchestra, and overall "oomph". (Note highly specialised technical term there..) Not so keen on the soloists, though.

Mr Weil and Tafelmusik now arrived and next to try!
