Chausson Poeme de l'Amour et la Mer - Ferrier/Barbirolli

To my shame I do not think that I have ever listened to this in full before . I remember it coming out full price in the 1980s and as an impecunious student passing over buying it .

It has sat unplayed in the Kathleen Ferrier Edition box for about 12 years . Forget the fact that it is an off air recording with much crackle and hiss . It is breathtakingly dramatic from Barbirolli ( what a great conductor he was of late romantic music ) and how wonderfully she sings this music which lies much higher than the music one is used to hearing her sing .

    It's fabulous .

    - heartbreaking that they didn't get into a studio with the work (the recording quality will be unignorable for some listeners): this is a superb performance.

There's a wonderful recording of Dame Felicity Lott singing it.

Yes - I also have Baker/LSO/Previn and Caballe/SoL/Morris, who are also both wonderful in this glorious work. But Ferrier, like them, is unique.

Baker is indeed also marvellous in the work . Ferrier's account makes you realise what other doors might have opened for her repertoire wise as Walter and Barbirolli sought to make sure she was not pigeonholed as an oratorio contralto .
