To my shame I do not think that I have ever listened to this in full before . I remember it coming out full price in the 1980s and as an impecunious student passing over buying it .
It has sat unplayed in the Kathleen Ferrier Edition box for about 12 years . Forget the fact that it is an off air recording with much crackle and hiss . It is breathtakingly dramatic from Barbirolli ( what a great conductor he was of late romantic music ) and how wonderfully she sings this music which lies much higher than the music one is used to hearing her sing .
It's fabulous .
