'HIPP' Beethoven String Quartet recordings on disc.

With the release of the Quatuor Mosaïques recordings of the late quartets, only Op. 59/1 & 2, the string quartet arrangement of Op. 14/1, a few fragments and the revised finale of Op. 130 remain to be appear, though there is the Kujiken Quartet playing the Razumovsky quartets (and the Op. 29 quintet) on instruments beefed up to modern norms. Has anyone here heard whispers re. plans to record the missing items?

This is wonderful news. Presto (which is offering the set for an irresistible 14.75) says they're released on 13th October. I can't wait to give these a try. Presumably they will get around to the Razumovskys ere long? Anyway, ordered!

The new Late Quartets are available for download or streaming, including in high resolution, from QOBUZ.

        .

        ... of the Mosaiques op 18 I have the CDs of 1 & 4 and 5 & 6 - the CD of 2 & 3 seems only available at silly prices. I so hope it will be re-released -

I'm sure it's just a question of time before Naive boxes them all together. And I very much hope that a similar gathering will be made of the Naive Vivaldi Edition, which up to now has been so hard to keep track of.

There's the Smithson Quartet's Op. 18 set, the Eroica Quartet in Harp, Serioso and Op.135, the Chiaroscuro Quartet in Op. 135 and the Schuppanzigh Quartet in Op. 59/3 and Op. 18/4.

Not forgetting the earliest (?) essay in this direction, the Collegium Aureum's op.132. I haven't heard it for many years but I always liked it a lot.

Yes, I think that op132 was probably the first in the genre - I bought it, and liked it a lot, as a student in the early 70s. There's a much more recent op.132 by the Swiss Quatuor Terpsycordes, coupled with op.18/6, on the Ambronay label, streamable on Qobuz.

And there's another op.130 (again with the GF, and without the second finale) by the Edding Quartet, on Phi (and also Qobuz). They're all principals of Orchestre des Champs-Elysées (the cellist is Mme Herreweghe): I really like this version. So far, I've only done a tiny bit of comparision with the new Mosaiques: Edding comes out ahead...

I also got that Collegium Aureum Op 132 which I remember playing a lot a time when I didn't own that many LPs. Checked garage. It's still there but not in good nick, and having recently phased out vinyl I would have to reconnect my turntable to listen.

                        .

... very many thanks to Bryn and others here. Have ordered the Smithson, Chiaroscuro, Schuppanzigh, Terpsycordes, and Edding to add to my Eroica and Mosaiques...

Yes, but never released on CD as far as I know. Though I have backed mine up to CD-R.

Also don't forget Quatuor Turner for the Op. 18s, 59/3 and 74, on Harmonia Mundi.... actually my favourite recording of the Op. 18 set.

The Terpsycordes's Op. 132 is wonderful, one of my preferred recordings, although I also have a lot of time for the new Mosaïques and the old Busch (and newish Belcea, in the same tradition). I'm not sure what I thought of the Op. 18/6 on the same CD. Evidently not as much.

I swear another youngish period instruments quartet (not the Chiaroscuro) also recorded Op. 95 recently but I can't remember their name now.

edit: the Windermere Quartet. I guess they're not that young, but they are recently formed, and Canadian for some reason.

Like many other early DHM LPs that really should be re-released on CD. I have hoped for so long in vain for the Schumann piano works that Jorg Demus recorded for the label.
