Partial downloads

Does anyone know why most download sites (eclassical an honourable exception, as so often) don’t allow the download of a single movement longer than 10 minutes or so?

I have a couple of discs where one track won’t play or rip and I’d happily pay £2-3 to get the missing movement! What’s the commercial risk? Or is it just that some licensing contacts are a bit old-fashioned?

My current #1 frustration is the Stoki LSO Brahms 1 (Decca/Cala) where the finale is “broken” and I can’t download it without buying the whole disc!

Surely this is an exaggeration - unless things have changed in the last year or so. I have many downloads of "tracks/songs" which are much longer than 10 minutes - but maybe they're the ones which nobody else wants to buy!

Mathias I agree it is annoying - who wants eg two movements of a symphony? The downloaders basicall just do not 'get' the needs of Classical music collectors!

Classics Online used to sell longer tracks individually - at a higher fee, of course. I managed to get Ferneyhough's Sieben Sterne that way without having to fork out for the rest of the (double!) album. It is eminently sensible - and (as mathias says) incredibly frustrating that it doesn't happen.

Are they still in business? If so, do they still do this? (I stopped using them when their prices shot up overnight.)
