Kathleen Ferrier - unpublished recordings on Somm !

19 unpublished songs apparently including some she never otherwise recorded . Sadly not , however, an off air recording of the Edinburgh Festival Das Lied von Der Erde or Abraham and Isaac !

    And then some!

I don't intend to outlive this! Many thanks indeed, Barbs

Has the BBC broadcast of the massive Soviet 'Symphony Cantata' "On the Field of Kulikobo" by Yuri Shaporin ever been released on CD? It was broadcast on 7 November 1945, with the BBC Symphony & Chorus conducted by Albert Coates and Ferrier was one of the four vocal soloists. Evidently they have the original broadcast acetates in the National Sound Archive but have these ever been made public or even re-broadcast on Radio 3?

Listening to the 30 second extracts of songs I had never heard her sing before sent shivers down the spine .

Don't buy from Amazon though, it's cheaper from Somm themselves.

25p cheaper if you count the postage costs from Somm albeit there are various download options too on their site .

It's not really the cost, it's good to support Somm for issuing it!

Agree with this. For the same reason I always buy Hyperion discs directly from them - and usually cheaper.

I certainly won't be able to resist Ferrier reissue.

[Coincidentally, my latest CD purchase which has just dropped through my letter box is a superb Mahler disc (listening right now) with Maureen Forrester, a contralto I love just as much as Kathleen. Also enjoying Heinz Rehfuss in Des Knaben Wunderhorn, a bass whom I have never really heard before]

I have finally had an opportunity to listen to this today . An extraordinary experience to hear her sing so much repertoire that is not otherwise preserved especially Wasserflut from Winterreise. A marvellous moving record .

I've bought this but am a bit baffled...

[Most of this post now deleted because the previously-expressed doubts about track 26 prove to be down to my own cloth ears]

Do buy the disc (unless you're bbm - see below)

I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

                            - my actual favourite singing voice of them all: the most beautiful Musical sound I know.

Oh well, at least we can agree to disagree.
