Thanks very much, VodkaDilc! I've actually been an OAP for a few years...
Obviously a very up-to-date one. I bet you twitter, facebookise and blackberry, all at the same time as reading your online newspapers and getting your next book on Kindling!

There is certainly a lot of meat in Fanfare. I certainly never read a whole issue word for word, but you do have two whole months to dip into it, and it's something you can always pick up again and find something of further interest.

As others have said, the helpfulness and integrity of the proprietor is beyond reproach - What a contrast with the present-day Gramophone!

James Inverne is stepping down as editor after an 'exciting' redesign.

This does not seem to have provoked much excitement! Is he moving on to greater things, after making such a success of Gramophone?

Kindling - that's about all Gramophone is fit for these days.

Is that a redesign of the mag or has an irate ex-reader set about Mr inverne with a half-brick?

I was at a 'do' the other day where James Jolly was referred to as 'the distinguished broadcaster' - pur-leaze! On that basis, shall we be having Mr Inverne doing Sailing By every morning

If we're really lucky he'll swop places with Roger Wright...

With comments like 'setting about Mr. Inverne with a half-brick' etc you must all be very proud about the civilising effect classical music, and subscribing to IRR, has had on you, each one of you with your crazy, brave nom-de-plumes so you're not really accountable for what you say.

Come on, Iain, sense of humour, metaphor etc.? Y'know, brick(bats) and such? Swift and Pope, I'm sure, said far worse things about their contemporaries...
by the way, my name and my picture are, in fact, me. Although I don't mention bricks (mind you, with a serious damp problem to attend to, they really are a sore point just now...)

Your humour and rich metaphors are so profound and intelligent they've seemingly gone right over my head. You are, of course, continuing the tradition of Swift and Pope and I was a fool not to see that.

Thanks, I missed this piece of news. Most importantly, do we know who is to be his replacement?

Or, since I think Micky and I are both ex-Gramophone readers, do we care?

It would be interesting to know. Maybe a Mr Wright?

No, I can't say that I would go that far, VodkaDilc, but I am intrigued! A quick scour of the Gramophone website and its news section provides no clues at all, so I presume no announcement has been made there. Where did the press release come from?

What an odd statement! It takes rather more than a quality of name to be accountable. I would love the opportunity to tell Mr Inverne how livid I am with what he has done to a once-favourite and much-valued magazine But would it make him 'accountable'? - would it buffalo!
