Good to see the audio editor playing his role of voice of reason so convincingly. However, the reader who seems to think that the exorbitant cover price subsidises the magazine's advertisers obviously hasn't been to business school lately!

I found myself in some sympathy with the staff.

Some of the posting was distinctly troll-like.

I gave it up many years ago. Previously I received an office copy as we/I advertised our firm in it. The BBCMM at least has complete works but the perpetual lists are rather boring. 20 greatest conductors this month

Has anyone seen James Jolly's avatar on the Gramophone Forum? He looks like classical music's answer to Simon Cowell.

Since asking my newsagent to replace my Gramophone order to International Record Review, I notice that there are now 4 copies of Gramophone on the shelf. Previously, the distributors had sent my copy and one other for the shelf (which invariably was returned unsold at the end of the month). It's very strange that they should now send four.

So how are you getting on with IRR, Eine Alpensinfonie? I've now had about 4 copies since my subscription began; I really enjoy it and don't miss Gramophone one jot.

MickyD, I like it very much. I get the impression that they care about the recordings, but in Gramophone, they care more for the headlines.

I couldn't agree more, it is like reading the Gramophone of old.

Looks like the audio editor, Andrew Everard, has succumbed once more to an inability to hold his temper with his readership. Another reader has had the temerity to question the gospel according to Saint Andrew over the perceived superiority of Naim equipment and been rewarded with being likened to a double glazing salesman for his efforts. Funnily enough, dear old Andrew doesn't appear to appreciate the irony of his remarks, given his own beating on the same gong.

After his libellous slandering of his estimable predecessors, messrs Borwick and Horn, I'm afraid my opinion of Andrew Everard has hit an all time low with this latest cheap shot.

I was goven a free copy of The Times in WHS Smith on Tuesday, when I bought "The Pianist" magazine. Inside was a spread of the worst ever classical LP albums artwork. I thought The Times must be slipping to Gramophone levels, only to discover that it was actually taken from Gramophone.

I'm no expert on Feng Shui but I would respectfully suggest to Mr Everard that he turn his bed around, since he seems to get out of it on the wrong side every day.

Yes, and what's more, the editor James Inverne was obviously so proud of having got this free publicity that he flagged it up on the Gramophone Forum.

I know I'm a Murdoch-obsessive, but please note that here he is smooching up to Mr Heseltine's Haymarket publications now that Gramophone has slid sufficiently far downmarket to be congruent with News International's standards, with its staff openly abusing customers on its forum to boot

                            I despair!

Well I don't actually, because I've just ordered my free copy of International Record Review and hope to be joining all you ex-Gramophone readers soon. Not that it makes me at all happy to see a once-fine quality publication like Gramophone so reduced.

All we need to do now is to get the unctuous tones of Jolly James off Radio 3 and I shall be a happier chap

I am confident that once you have seen the sample copy, you will switching subscriptions soon, amateur51.

I too was loathe to ditch Gramophone after so many years, but enough was enough - what tipped the balance for me was the disgraceful treatment of readers on their forum.

What I found even more astonishing was their selection of 'Three of the Best' record covers at the end of the article, two of which would IMO be candidates for the worst list - there's no accounting for (James Inverne's) taste.

But that one of Birgit Nilsson (as Salomé) trying to save herself from falling down a cliff is quite hideous - most appropriate.
