I have to say I am not keen on the one called Raymond S. Tuttle.

He also contributes to Fanfare*; I enjoy his approach.

          * The issue which arrived today has an interesting review of the Powell book on Britten. (I've no idea how far down the thread on the BB books has dropped, so I'll go off-topic and mention it here.)

Sounds to me like a visiting American academic in one of Kingsley Amis' novels of university life.

On Freeview, it says "Lorin Maazel conducts the Vienna Philharmonic in Bruckner's Symphony no 7 in C Minor."

It's frustrating isn't it, and amazing, considering what they're asking, that they haven't worked on this.
I currently have a trial of the online version only which will (or may not) morph into a subscription. You do seem to have to put a LOT of info into the search before you can track down a particular review. Even then one usually ends up finding it via the "comparatives" which do list the issue date/number.

I just tried "Mahler Symphony No.5 Haitink" and in a few seconds I had the LP review (4/72), the BPO release (7/89), a 3-way comparison (Inbal/Levine, 1/87)and a FNO Live one from 2005... just be specific in the search, that's all, and enjoy the serendipity as you go...

I wouldn't bother - I gave up on my subscription owing to the woeful search in the online database.

Don't give up, Mathias, see above! It's too much fun not to have it, think of all those Quarterly Retrospects and Sounds in Retrospects following up the review itself...

Bit like Panto this isn't it? No you shouldn't, YES YOU SHOULD!

                            LOL.

Yes, the serendipity and the regulars are the best things so far.

The other downside is how much TIME it can swallow....

                                Gramophone Archive...?
... finally it comes back to the simplest principle of all: if you enjoy researching the recorded history of a given composer, performer or orchestra (whether as a buyers' guide or not) - across almost the whole of the era of Recorded Classical Music - then, whatever your problems with its functionality, there is nothing REMOTELY comparable.
