Andrew manze's VW cycle - have the wheels come off ?

I have not been collecting this as although I like these symphonies a great deal having the Boult and Haitink sets plus every recording Barbirolli made of a VW symphony I feel covered .

Rave reviews have been forthcoming both of the concerts in which he has conducted VW and the earlier recording/ Both Gramophone and BBCMM very lukewarm about his coupling of 3 and 4 - anyone heard it ?

Hello there Babs,

In short, I haven't heard the recording but I remember being very impressed and moved by Manze's performance of The Pastoral at the Proms back in 2014.

The first instalment,2 & 8,fabulous.
The second release,3 (tenor voice really works I think) & 4,another wonderful record which was briefly discussed in this very thread a few days back.
Couple of forumites were impressed as was I,No 4 ever so slightly disappointing for me,not enough terror where there should be IMO.
The music web reviews of both discs are favourable too.(Tevot beat me to it)
5 & 6 to come early next year.

Bought the London but didn't like it owing to the lack of atmosphere in the recording, though the performance seemed fine. For me in this work it is Elder and Thomson.

He should have done a PMD cycle, instead.

Not heard 2/8, as I said in the aforementioned thread 4 is marvellous, yes the tenor does work but overall there are other 3s ahead of it for me.
