Does anyone have a recommendation for Sofia Gubaidulina’s 'The Canticle of the Sun' ?
I want it as a download. I’ve seen three available, but I’d like a steer. Where’s Jayne when we need her!
The Ones I’m aware of are:
Pieter Wispelway (cello) & Collegium Vocale Gent, et al
Rostropovich, London voices, LSO
Gidon Kremer, Riga Chamber Choir, et al

The Gramophone feature on Gubaidulina (8/14) picked out the Rostropovich/LSO/Numajiri on EMI, but not comparatively. If I were going to take a punt I'd go for the ECM (Altstaedt/Riga/Kremer etc) as I'm very fond of the label: they generally have excellent, spaciously atmospheric sound (to match their spiritual minimalist catalogue of Kancheli, the evocative soundscapes of Tüür etc) & beautiful presentation, it is in hi-res, the Latvian forces may get closer to an idiomatic interpretation, and it appears to have the more interesting coupling.
It reviewed very well too.
(Anyway, d'you know that Mengelberg Mahler 4? I played the Pristine again and it is a truly remarkable reading....the Archipel is good, but Pristine have gone one better in spaciousness and sweetness..)Last edited by jayne lee wilson; 17-05-17, 19:54.

I don’t know the Mengelberg M4, but at 9 euros, I may take a punt.

A short while ago I listened to Mahler 9, BPO Simon Rattle and really enjoyed it. Got me rooting through my collection and apart from my old Bruno Maderna/BBCSO CD, all my recordings are the usual suspects - Karajan, Klemperer, Abbado and so on.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a more up to date recording, free of the usual suspects?

Could you have a quick look at my question to you about Blackstar in post #414 the WAYLTN thread. Cheers!
UPDATE: eClassical & Qobuz don't have the Nott M9 (although they have plenty of other Nott Mahler downloads). Presto want over £19 for a basic 16 bit download and Amazon want over £18 for the CD. I will wait until prices go a bit easier!
P.S. For example, Qobuz ask £11.99 for other two CD Mahler equivalents - M2 & M3. Maybe they'll get M9 at some point. I may email them on that point.Last edited by Beef Oven!; 25-05-17, 09:00.

I bought this Poul Ruders CD on its release or soon after having read a review in Gramophone (I think) in 1993/4. It's served me well and I've never added any more of Ruder's work to my collection. I saw a great bargain on Quobuz - his 5th symphony for £2.39. It's 36 minutes long and I'm looking forward to giving it a spin.
Does anybody have a recommendation for any of his other works, especially for smaller forces?

I don't know very much about Poul Ruders though, apart from associating him with the British MOR composers whose work came to the fore in the 1980s (Knussen, Bainbridge, Saxton, C Matthews etc.)
