I took delivery this morning of an Australian Eloquence recording of Mozart woodwind concertos that I bought to hear G de P's first recording of the Clarinet Concerto . On first listening that sounds good as beautifully turned as one would expect and a little livelier than his stereo recording.
The highlights of the CD to me , however, have been a very characterful and witty account of the Bassoon Concerto with Henri Helearts who was apparently the long time principal bassoonist of the Suisse Romande Orchestra and the Mozart Flute Concerto No 2 with Monteux pere et fils .
The recording of the Flute Concerto is a revelation . The conducting as wonderful as it one would expect but what a fabulous player Claude Monteux who I had never heard before appears to have been - he has a beautiful light tone but every note sparkles with interest . A magical recording that to me has delighted me like none other of this concerto .
Anyone know more about him and other recordings he made ? I understand he had to retire due to dystonia in his early 60s and Wikipedia tells me he died in 2013 .
