    Joubert

Very pleased to hear half an hour of today's programme devoted to JJ, including a disc of his choral music, hia organ piece The Martyrdom of St Alban and an extract from his opera Jane Eyre. His own compositional output has been immense, including symphonies, two more operas, concertos and chamber music. Those who know him will also know that he was an extremely capable practical musician with fine conducting skills.
I would like to correct one statement made by Andrew Mc G. which implied JJ had been on the staff of The Birmingham Conservatoire (whose chamber choir made the choral CD). He was in fact a senior lecturer, later a Reader, in the Department of Music at Birmingham University. I was pleased to be present at his award of a Doctorate from that University, one of my daughters getting her BMus at the same ceremony. A happy day.

His 2nd Symphony is very powerful.
Influenced by troubled times in South Africa under apartheid and for a time banned in that country.
    It's available in Dutton Epoch.

My former choirmaster knew John Joubert, probably through the South African connection where his daughter lived. A pity I never asked for more details but he always mentioned it every time we rehearsed JJ's Torches for the Christmas carol service.
