    Verdi and Strauss Quartets

I have the Delme Quartet CD on Hyperion of the Verdi and Strauss Quartets, but I find the sound rather thin and would like to find an alternative pairing. There doesn't seem to be much choice, has anybody a recommendation, particularly for the Strauss?

Sorry. I don't know the Strauss Quartet at all, a situation I will attempt to remedy tomorrow. However, I can recommend the Hagen Quartet in the Verdi. Very fine recording, imho.

You could try the Naxos disc with the Strauss, Verdi and Puccini Quartets with the Ensö Quartet. I find the performances and the sound quality very satisfactory.

Thanks reinerfan, I've just ordered your Naxos recommendation, especially as I have never heard the Puccini.

The Puccini is the short piece Crisantemi ("Chrysanthemums") which used to be played remarkably regularly on Aubade, the 1980s equivalent of Breakfast. There's also an arrangement for String Orchestra. I don't know the Puccini Minuets also featured on this CD.

After I wrote it I realised that the Puccini was indeed Crisantemi. I have the version by Chailly and the Berlin RSO on Decca. This is a very pleasant compilation of Opera preludes and short orchestral pieces, off cuts if you like. I'll listen to it tomorrow while awaiting the Naxos disc of quartets.,
