I was listening to these earlier, and the did a bit of 'window shopping' and I have the distinct impression that there don't seem to be an awful lot of recordings of these two great chamber works. I find this conclusion quite surprising. Mine was Sebok/Starker, and very enjoyable it is, too. I just wondered if anyone else is fond of these, and if so, what other recordings are 'out there' that are worth consideration.....
Brahms cello sonatas

Among those I play most often:
Fournier and Backhaus on Decca
Fournier and Firkusny on DG
Yo-Yo Ma and Ax on RCA (1985)
Ditto on Sony (1992)
Bylsma and Orkis on Sony (period instruments)
I used to be very fond of Du Pré/Barenboim (EMI) but find it a bit overwrought now - my problem, not theirs.

I have enjoyed these works since getting Sebök/Starker on the Philips complete Chamber box. I recently got a Rubinstein Brahms set where he plays the Cello Sonatas with Gregor Piatigorsky. I also like Hélène Grimaud & Truls Mørk in No 1.

Marc Coppey/Peter Laul and Pieter Wispelwey/Paul Komen are the two that I have, both of them delightful. I don't seem to collect the Brahms cello sonatas the same way I do his violin sonatas though, which I think is more because... almost every recording of the cello sonatas seems to be good?? No idea why that is.
