I like the idea of making up a programme of music from a single year, even if only in excerpts, to hear how the different pieces and their aesthetics reflect on one another, whether the year is 1917 or any other. But this compilation looks to me like a dog's breakfast whose main priority is to squeeze a few more euros out of the DG back catalogue, culminating in Shostakovich's least interesting symphony which was anyway written in 1961.

Well at least I looked it up - http://www.prestoclassical.co.uk/r/DG/94796969

am.uk's price is higher, though postage may be free depending on the order.

Some potentially interesting material there, but having the "usual" stuff mixed in in bleeding chunks (or morceaux presents a problem. Will people listen right through, or simply select the tracks which interest them? An interesing "sampler" collection maybe, though the phrase "dog's breakfast" used above resonates.
