On collecting records

The Jarvi box of the Prokofiev symphonies that was going for a song a couple of years back sits unplayed and I have just got round to that Roslavets Violin Concerto recording. I do always try and play a record the moment I get it but there are a lot that have had only one or two plays but again i don't want to part with them just in case I fancy giving them another whirl.

Ah yes, this can be a bit embarrassing! Anyone else ever bought a CD only to find they actually have it already sitting on the shelves? My excuse is that the endless repackaging that goes on and shows no sign of abating, makes it very confusing for the collector. Not done it often but often enough to have to give away a couple or so discs to the charity shop.

Thankfully, Amazon (nowadays my main source), helpfully point out when you have already added an item to your
ever-increasing collection, when you are logged in and click on the item details (helpful when the old grey matter is clearly on the wane!!).

My CD collection has been in the loft for the last year and a half (long story!)

We've just moved house so I now have a spare bedroom dedicated to my addiction. As I was putting the 'loft' collection together with the cds I'd bought in the last year and a half I found I have 4 recordings of Levine and the Vienna Phil. playing Mozart 40 & 41. (All the same cover so no excuses about repackaging this time!)

Good performance though. Perhaps I should get them all going at the same time in different rooms...

Careful, without perfect coordination between the systems you might end up inventing Minimalism!!!

I too have a guilty conscience about so-far unplayed discs, and an even bigger one about the much greater number of 'played-oncers'. I ease it in two ways;
1) I'm looking forward to my retirement in which I shall have time enough to wear them all out (and of course will be far more careful about new additions
2) Even if I only play a disc once, it's about the same price as going to a concert. We don't have a guity conscience about going to such an expensive, entirely transient event, so listen-once plus the possibility of rehearing (or of aiding Oxfam, if necessary posthumously) is actually quite a good deal!

It's all gone to pot for two reasons 1) the sheer quantity of discs awaiting audition and 2) I've long since run out of shelf space and I have piles of CD's on the floor etc. Impossible to keep track of it all.

Since joining these boards three years ago my CD buying has dramatically increased making the problem even worse!

I have six Arrowfile albums which hold 4 CDs per page in plastic pockets with room for the notes as well. This is my reserve collection holding either music that I'm not enamoured by, or oddities of one sort or another. This also leaves room for miscellaneous compilations like English Light music which I can raid for background listening when we have our Friday night nosh.
I can recommend this system for saving a bit of space, as you can crowd a lot in, but it's a bit awkward for arranging things in alphabetical order.
I've realised that today's "Oh well, it's OK but boring" can become tomorrow's neglected masterpiece, so I try not to discard.
