I just played the 24/192 download of the NYPO/Gilbert Nielsen 2nd and ....whoa... those New York brasses vintage 2011? Heavens....my Goodness....! Really quite the phenomenon. Wowser !

I didn't take to it so much, a few years ago, on acquisition.... it's a grower...(as recordings should hopefully be).
Love the very natural, concert-hall perspectives on this Da Capo set, the climaxes truly open out, gloriously so in the malincolico... quite something. I don't really have faves in this rep, would probably place Oramo or Blomstedt DRSO ahead of this very heroic one (more idiomatic, humorous, quicksilver etc) but... what a wonderful hi-res Nielsen thing to sit in front of....

    (I did briefly try a comparison with the NYPO/Bernstein one, but....well....hmm....yeah... ...

The Garaguly on a Vox Turnabout LP was my introduction to the 2nd. It remains a favourite.

Before my time, that one, and probably well beyond my youthful budget too.

I'm downloading the Alan Gilbert cycle stream from Qobuz to listen to tomorrow

I've been listening to a lot of Hosokawa's orchestral music over the last few days and was curious about his string quartets. The discussion on another thread concerning the Quatuor Diotima meant that I could not resist this purchase!

Very much liking what I heard on today's BaL, I have just downloaded the Quartetto Italiano recording of the Debussy string quartet.

Berlioz: Harold en Italie/Les Nuits d'Été

                  Tabea Zimmerman (Viola)/Stéphane Degout (Baritone)/Les Siècles/F-X R

Having never before heard a baritone in the songs, I'm intrigued. But, hey, anything, pace JLW who seems to have a real down on him, anything conducted by F-X R - and anything featuring Les Siècles - can't go very wrong in my book. From e-classical at a reasonable price:

24 FLAC Discount Berlioz the pioneer A new aesthetic calls for new forms: such is the challenge the composer set for himself in the two works presented here. In Les Nuits

At £7.99 (16 bit from Qobuz) this set is an unmissable bargain and does not count against my monthly allowance of two downloads ....

I bought a couple of assorted mp3s yesterday - various sections of Liszt's Sardanapalo plus the Huldigungsmarsch, S228i. Not listened yet...
                      Best regards,

                        Tubin’s complete Symphonies with Järvi

Can’t believe I was so late to this party

WHY is this music not played all the time? If you care about mid 20th Century music you MUST hear this. A distinctive voice but with happy echoes of RVW, Walton, Debussy, Sibelius.

BTW the Järvi 4th is a dud, so you need Volmer as a supplement for that!

                          Rossini: Overtures

Orchestra del Teatro Communale di Bologna/Michele Mariotti (Pentatone DSD download from HD Tracks)

I can never tire of Rossini's overtures (LSO/Pierino Gamba is a disc I would take to a desert island) and this new disc, which was awarded a Diapason d'Or, is, well, terrific. Stylish playing, excellent recording up to Pentatone's usual high standards, well-filled (9 overtures), what's not to like?

                            The Download format?

Only joking. But I'm a novice here. How do you lot get on with downloading the booklet etc.? I'm not always quite sure if I've got it, and where on my computer it is.

In the case of this download from HD Tracks (using the HD Tracks Downloader application), it creates a folder (in my case on my MacBook) into which the music files plus the cover art plus the booklet (as a PDF) are downloaded. I've recently committed my Desktop to the bloody iCloud (don't even go there) so I can't actually find the damned folder. In theory, it's easy - and HDT, as well as the other usual suspects like eclassical.com and Qobuz, do provide you with the booklet as a PDF. By the way, it is a really delightful disc.

Sorry, yes, I picked that up, it does sound very desirable.
