The article here gives some clues for iOS - http://www.macworld.com/article/2064...s-devices.html

Possibly using a 3rd party app, but it's not something I've ever used.

I buy buy most of my high resolution purchases from Qobuz. What I tend to do is download the hi-res version and then append the text "(Qobuz 24/96)" to the end of the album title, then download the 16/44.1 version. I can then use the latter version on my phone. The reason for adding the text is to prevent iTunes merging the two downloads into a single album.

One great thing with Qobuz is that you can download a purchase as many times, and in as many different formats, as you wish.

The wma files I was referring to were lossless 96/24. The open fine in Sound Forge, and should be easily resolvable to lpcm with other utility programs. It's just that I would have preferred FLACs.

I thought WMA was an old format, and not going up to lossless 96/24.

Steve - I can't remember now whether I ever did buy anything from Qobuz. I may have done. I didn't realise that re-downloading was possible - though mightn't it depend on the level of membership? I have a basic level membership which I use for auditioning purposes. Also that re-download capability might not apply to the currently free offer. Some other "clubs" are not so generous - one being emusic, which used to do that, but is now rather less considerate.

Good point about relabelling the files - that's exactly the sort of thing that I'm wary about Apple doing, or converting an expensively obtained Hi Res file into an aac one - "because we've got your music in our cloud"! However I have known some users to get a better quality version if they started off with a version which was lower quality than aac at 256kbps - or dare I say it an (arguably) legit version from a bootlegged copy using iTunes Match.

You don't need to subscribe to their streaming service to buy recording from Qobuz, all that's needed is an account. I'd imagine being able to redownload purchases was standard for all.

The Dudamel free download now appears in "My Music" on the Qobuz website, so although it's free as a download for a limited time I'll be able to download it again at some future point should I need to.

PJPJ alerted me to pianist Stewart Goodyear playing his own arrangement of the complete Nutcracker. And what a cracker it is too; engineered by Sono Luminus for Steinway & Sons the 24/96 recording - from a DSD original - is also top-notch:

Shame about the coupling. The Varese Ameriques release also has a silly coupling. Although I don’t share your enthusiasm for Morlot’s Ives 2, I would certainly have bought it if it had been coupled with further Ives works.

Morlot has been dubbed Sir Mix-a-lot for his odd programmes in concert and on disc. In this case I have no problems with the couplings, which are anything but 'silly'. However, his Stravinsky ballet series is blighted by some seriously sub-standard stuff; for example, his Firebird is paired with The Sinewaveland, Vladimir Nikolaev's eminently fprgettable 'tribute' to Jimi Hendrix. But then his Rite is coupled with a very powerful and interesting piece, Alexander Raskatov's Piano Concerto ‘Night Butterflies’.

BTW, is there any chance a kind Host could move this thread to Record Review or Talking About Music? Isn't that where it belongs?

I mean silly in that collectors wanting a new Ives 2 or an Amerique, really don’t need another American in Paris or Dvorak 9.

And if you’re in the market for a Dvorak 9, chances are you won’t want Varese’s Amerique. Similarly American in Paris.

Where I would agree that it’s not silly is in relation to a concert programme. No qualms with these sets on that score.

What’s frustrating, is how download firms seem to quite often deny the customer of one of the supposed benefits of this medium; selecting works from an album without buying the whole album. Regarding the Ives 2, Qobuz won’t let you do it and Presto perversely charges you £14.00 for the whole album, and £14.70 if you only buy the Ives and forego the Catrer and Gershwin!!!!

There is a used copy of that Ives 2 CD for £5 on Amazon.
Wouldn't buying that, ripping it, and then storing the Cd in the roof/garage/car boot be a cheaper, and reasonably easy option?
or does ripping not give you the same quality as a lossless download. ( sorry if that is a daft question).

So you didn't know? eClassical have always allowed selection of any tracks from any of their downloads, priced per second, without financial penalty, and still with the pdf booklet for free, where available.
When I bough the marvellous Ives 2 - one of the finest ever (if you want the specifics, see my BaL review), I simply left the Gershwin out...

I certainly agree with BeefO about DSPs not allowing buyers to cherry pick. Qobuz is one of the worst offenders in this regard. eClassical is much more flexible, as are the labels themselves (Chandos and Hyperion come to mind).

And yes, ripping the CD to a lossless format gives you an identical copy if you use software such as EAC. And that can work out cheaper than the download option, as your example suggests. The only caveat is that the copy will be 16/44.1, whereas the high-res download is 24/96.

Edit: Jayne beat me to it :)

Thanks, I didn’t realise that e-classical is different. I don’t use them much. Even though Morlot’s Ives 2 was only an 'also-ran' that was swiftly eliminated in the recent BaL, It still might be worth getting. I’ll check the e-music site.

I’m pleased with his Ives 3 & 4. An excellent Qobuz Hi-Res download.

Btw, your comment about applause is interesting to me. At the end of the Amerique performance, the applause is left on, but not for nearly long enough. Either get rid of it, or leave it on for at least 60 seconds. I personally prefer to have the applause left on and would cite Abbado’s Mahler and Celibidache’s EMI sets as excellent examples.
