I’m pleased with his Ives 3 & 4. An excellent Qobuz Hi-Res download.

Btw, your comment about applause is interesting to me. At the end of the Amerique performance, the applause is left on, but not for nearly long enough. I personally prefer to have the applause left on and would cite Abbado’s Mahler and Celibidache’s EMI sets as excellent examples.
ES actually did that? That really does surprise me, I must admit. But I guess he wouldn't have specified what he listened to, disc or download. I'm afraid it sometimes makes a significant difference. I'll try to hear the BaL, but I would add that the Morlot 2 was very positively (if briefly) reviewed in Gramophone a few years ago in a Seattle roundup (GN, Awards 2014).

I checked e-classical and it is £8.44 for just Ives 2, so I whizzed over to Qobuz and shelled out the extra £4.00 and got the whole album! It’s downloading as I type.

I must say I don’t mind adding a few recordings, I really like this symphony. I it’s own way, it ranks alongside #4.

May even listen to An American in Paris - can’t see it ousting my beloved, time-honoured Previn/LSO either in performance or sound quality.

Perhaps not that surprising, as ES is an unashamed Bernstein fan. As am I, but to write off Morlot seems perverse.

I was surprised with the swiftness that it was dispatched with. Especially since the recording of 3 & 4, Central Park In The Dark & The Unanswered Question is utterly superb (I think you and HighlandDougie recommended that recording to me). I’m a big Bernstein fan.

I shall. I’ve been listening to both Bernsteins this evening (the later DG twice). I’m about to have a cup of tea and if I have the energy, I will have a listen to Ives 2 tonight.

Just downloaded these very interesting Hyperion releases (out today):

<p>International Women’s Day falls on 8 March, celebrating the ‘social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women’. Volume 70 in our Romantic Piano Concerto series champions three female composers, and three works whose in-the-face-of-it-all joie de vivre makes them irresistibly worthy of our attention.</p>

<img src="/jpegs/banners/CDA68153-Bartok.png" width="220" height="150" hspace="10" align="left" alt="Cédric Tiberghien, François-Frédéric Guy, Colin Currie & Sam Walton recording Bartók's Sonata for two pianos and percussion in Henry Wood Hall, London" longdesc="Cédric Tiberghien, François-Frédéric Guy, Colin Currie & Sam Walton recording Bartók's Sonata for two pianos and percussion in Henry Wood Hall, London" />A welcome return to the piano music of Béla Bartók and a programme which includes the popular Sonatina, the aggressively experimental Op 18 Études and the Piano Sonata of 1926, the composer’s ‘year of the piano’. Cédric Tiberghien is then joined by François-Frédéric Guy, Colin Currie and Sam Walton for the Sonata for two pianos and percussion—a high-spirited conclusion to this successful mini series.</p>

The Bartok looks very tempting, but having just ordered just over £100 of Presto promotional offers, it will have to wait. The Romantics bear the Radio 3 logo, so I will look out for them in the schedule, to sample before deciding whether to purchase.

Bit of a Dvořák-fest, with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the LPO in Othello and the Sixth and Seventh symphonies:

I much admired their Saint-Saẽns and Poulenc a while back, and YN-S’s Bavarian Mahler 1 is one of the finest I’ve eard in ages.

And then there’s the New World and Slavonic Dances from Andrés Orozco-Estrada and the Houston Symphony:

Dvorak’s New World Symphony is counted among the most successful and distinctive symphonies ever written and it loses none of its drama or appeal on […]

Oops! Too late. They were broadcast on Afternoon on 3 back in January this year.

Wonderfully propulsive, hard-edged, big-wind small-string Posthorn, sound and balance familiar and much loved from the Brautigam/Willens Piano Concerto series, just a shade more explicit in its detail which is offered in stunningly-resolved hi-res immediacy of sound.

At first I wondered if Willens wasn't keeping tempo and rhythm on too strict a leash, but when the wind soloists came in through the middle movements, I was charmed by their freshness and individuality - Willens offsets this against the discipline of the orchestral passages to compelling effect. Just listen to the beauty-and-the-beast flute/bassoon dialogue in the first minuet.

Strings then take over for the KLeine Nachtmuisk . I left this behind initially (familiarity bites...!), then went back for it after the vivid impression left by the k320. Strikingly remade, with unusually emphasised dynamic and rhythmic articulation, and wonderfully pure upper string tone, on the edge-of-edginess but never over it. The k525 includes an extra movement placed 2nd, the minuet from the k80 String Quartet, and quite exquisite it is.

(24/96 purchased from eclassical, playback: wavs in JRiver MC)

Followed HighlandDougie’s tip on the 'What are you listening to now' thread and downloaded as Hi-Res/Studio Quality 24 bit from e-classical for £8.40 (on a current discount).
