With groaning CD shelves I'm moving over more and more to downloads, after initial reticence. I followed Jayne's recommendation elsewhere and got the Chiaroscuro Death and the Maiden from eClassical. So glad I did. It's a beautifully played, at times harrowing, visceral performance. I've listened to the work countless times over the decades but heard lots of new things here. Cheaper than the CD and the 16 bit Flac version sounds great.

I was reticent, for a long time. Now I wish I had made the switch much earlier. I still buy CDs, if they are substantially cheaper than a download.

Good luck, I hope it goes well for you.

Groaning shelves are a pain but I don’t really want all the faff of linking hifi system to the pc and downloading stuff from cds. When I buy downloads I burn to CD which adds to the storage but at least I don’t risk losing them by the death of a hard drive or laptop, both of which I have experienced! I know I need to have a cd cull to ship out duplicates and store more cds minus the jewel cases.

Not really a faff. I have a digital tuner (this one) which is in daily use and does everything pretty effortlessly. As well as DAB, it tunes into my router giving access to umpteen internet radio staions (including Radio 3 HD) but also connecting to music files on my laptop. As backup my mp3s and flacs are also on an external hard drive. Some are downloads, some taken from CDs. They come to about 40 gb - just rightclicked = 7,223 Files, 552 Folders! - and easily fit on a 64 gb usb drive, which is tiny and stays permanently and unobtrusively plugged into the front of the tuner, giving another way of accessing them ... and is also a second backup.

Sounds fairly straightforward, maybe at some point I will go down the digital tuner route once FM is switched off! I like to think I’m not a Luddite but I’m happy with the way I listen at the moment and don’t feel the urge to change.

Please correct me if I am mistaken, but the tuner doesn't do "Listen Again" for Radio3 etc, for which you need a computer or tablet, so why not use the computer or tablet to do internet radio, so you don't need a tuner? Is it just easier to use the tuner?

Thanks for the heads up. I replaced my (lost/lent/misplaced) Gergiev Mahler 5 CD with a nicely priced 24/96 Hi-Res download

Weinberg 12 & 7 Maxim Shostakovich conducting. I wasn't getting as much out of my Hi-Res St Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra/Vladimir Lande Naxos recording of Symphony #12. I found it slightly tame. Apparently Maxim's account is the one to have ........

The whole set is only about £12 in hi res....

                        Huh? Doh!

Actually, I have them all except #1. I collected them as they came out following the performances that I attended in the 2000s

Sounds reasonable but Mahler and Gergiev are not always an ideal match!

perfect match. Attended the whole cycle in London with the LSO. Incredible.

And £11.99 for a complete Mahler cycle in Hi-Res is not 'reasonable', it is spectacular value!!!!

Where? A link would be useful. The price I found was around double that.
